Why not give everyone who can drive a license?

Maine is a friendly, trusting place. So what’s wrong with giving drivers licenses to people who may or may not live in the Pine Tree State? Regardless of the state’s problems with the federal Real ID plan, should Maine require more proof of residency for those seeking drivers licenses? Could such requirements be easily faked? Does it matter?

REAL ID LAW

While I may have some reservations about Real ID and whether it will protect us from terrorism, I do think that if even one State is allowed to ignore implementing the law then it should be scrapped. It would be akin to filling a bucket with water that has holes in it, the water will leak out. My main concern is the Governor of this State took an oath of office to uphold the law, as did others like our Attorney General. They should be impeached if they continue to encourage people who are breaking our immigration laws to come here. They as lawyers should know better than anyone that while they may not like the laws as they are now written they still need to obey those laws or get them changed. It is against the law in every State to come into this country illegally, and we expect our elected officials to obey the law, not just the ones they agree with. Otherwise I would ask the Governor what laws, we as law-abiding citizens can choose to ignore. Can we stop paying our taxes? Can we ignore the speed limit and then ignore the speeding tickets? Do we get a free pass when it comes to registering our vehicles? If not, why not? If you can ignore our immigration laws and turn Maine into a "Sanctuary State" then why do we have to obey laws we disagree with? The Government has a duty to protect it's citizens and by implementing simple safeguards those who are here illegally and may have committed other crimes while here and terrorists will have a harder time getting driver's licenses. Will they still drive, undoubtedly but then they stand a greater risk of being stopped and questioned more closely than they might if they had a valid driver's license. Our police are our first line of defense against those who would do us harm.

Real ID Comments

I have read about the Real ID in the local paper as well in other papers across country. Although a current resident of the state of Maine I have the oppurtunity to travel virtually every week. Upon reading the matter concerning the Real ID I have started to simply carry a passport, I was actually finding in some airports across the country that TSA would actually state, "I have never seen a Maine License before" and bingo I was put into the line for special screening. The carrying of a passport eliminates that problem. I completly support the Federal Government stepping in and putting pressure on the state to adhere to certain "rules" concerning the ID process. The entire concept that a person that is an "Illegal Alien" (please note that I want to stress the term Illegal) could potentially get a valid Maine drivers license should appall anyone. I work hard for the living I have created within the State of Maine and I myself abide by the currrent laws within the state and the country, I simply would want others that I have to share my living space with to do the same. Many people point out that there would be issues with privacy, every day people use debit cards, credit cards, and the like to purchase goods, site the recent event at a local super market. This matter hasn't stopped anyone from buying groceries? I myself have nothing to hide I pay attention to my credit scores, I pay attention to the things that would flag identity theft. Others should do the same. I believe that although it will cost $$ to implement it will only benefit us as a state and the country over all. People in Maine need to take some responsibility for themselves and understand that the government is not a charity but an institution to provide safety and infrastructure to the people of the state to carry on their lives. Bottom line, get over it, and pass the Real ID the state government has other issues to deal with that are much more important. Taking a stance on this will exhaust resources that could be used elsewhere.
