Maine truckers went to Washington, D.C., to protest high diesel prices. Farmers worry that high fuel prices will put them out of business. Blueberry growers fret about the cost of burn-ing their fields to promote growth. What is the solution? Should the U.S. drill for oil in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge? What about areas off the New England coast? Should gas-guzzling SUVs be banned?
Truckers..I wish them luck
Leaving and not driving is not an option.
They need a living doing something. And most truck drivers, have done just that most of their lives.. so this is their consistent living. But something does need to give with the gas prices for them. We as Maine citizens as I am sure elsewhere are feeling the impact in our food costs. Which have sky rocketed quite a bit in the last 6 months.
And I am noticing that some products that I used to buy are not in the stores as they are not being shipped any longer, as the truck drivers are not there to ship it out.
Larger amounts of items and products are getting harder to find. Hence, I am going back to shopping at Sam's Club hoping that will resolve the issue.
But something not only has to give for the drivers of truck, but also for just the gas in general or we are looking at a massive crisis to just get products delivered for Maine and other states as well.
Ethanol is NOT the answer
Maine getting a 30 million dollor grant to work on wood ethanal is a joke. Am I the only person who is aware of the fact that it requires oil to produce ethanol? On top of that , ethanol is STILL BURNED. Doesn't that go against what every person who walks around continuosly making refference to a "carbon footprint" or a "greener world"?
Oil speculation
BDN could lower oil prices simply by publishing the names and addresses of all the people and organizations manipulating the oil market through computerized energy trading. If Senator Olympia Snow helps close the Enron loophole which shields energy speculators. Who are these people, and are they engaging in economic warfare?
drilling for more oil
The discontinuation of exporting U.S. oil might be a good start instead of looking to new drilling sites. I watched as foreign oil tanker after foreign oil tanker filled up and left from the Alaska Pipeline Terminal at the Port of Valdez.
Driving to DC? A solution to the problem?
What kind of protest actually uses the very item that is the issue? It seems rather silly that all the truckers drove to DC to protest prices of fuel? Instead stop driving...
